Uyuni Sutra, 2008 - 2011 [série Turista Transcendental]
A palavra sutra, em sânscrito, significa, literalmente, ‘uma linha que mantém
coisas unidas'; entretanto, também se refere a um aforisma formado por uma
sucessão de conceitos específicos os quais, se unidos numa sequência linear
específica, geram um saber filosófico ou moral.
Uyuni
sutra foi idealizado e construído como uma alegoria da experiência da
meditação, exercício cuja finalidade é interromper o fluxo do pensamento,
esvaziando e aquietando a mente, como se ela pudesse se tornar ‘um lago sereno,
sem ondas'. No vídeo, a paisagem monótona da viagem realizada da margem do
Salar do Uyuni até a chegada à Ilha Incahuasi, capturada de dentro de um carro
com a câmera na mão, foi transformada numa espécie de exercício, no qual o
espectador acompanha o meu esforço em tentar manter, na horizontal e
centralizada no vídeo, a linha do horizonte do Uyuni, o maior salar do mundo,
localizado na Bolívia.
No vídeo, o que se vê, além da paisagem aparentemente imutável, é o surgimento
repentino e intermitente de uma linha-guia verde -como as guias de programas de
computação gráfica- aplicada sobre a linha do horizonte, em todos os momentos
em que a câmera a capta exatamente no centro da tela e a zero grau. O resultado
visual do exercício, quando marcado pelo surgimento da linha-guia, se situa
entre a estética do videogame e o layout
dos painéis de controle de avião, depois de passar por uma rotação de 90 graus,
transformando o horizonte numa linha vertical. A linha-guia aparece mais
espessa quando há o equilíbrio perfeito entre as duas metades da imagem: a da
direita, ocupada pelo céu aparentemente imóvel, e a da esquerda, pelo sal -melhor
dizendo pela planície de sal- que se move constantemente. Opostos unidos,
harmonizados, apaziguados.

Uyuni Sutra, 2008 - 2011 [Transcendental Tourist series]
The
word sutra, in Sanskrit, literally
means 'a line that keeps things together'; but it also refers to an aphorism
formed by a succession of specific concepts that, combined, generate moral or
philosophical knowledge.
Uyuni sutra was
conceived and created as an allegory of the experience of meditation, an
exercise whose purpose is to stop the flow of thought, quieting and emptying
the mind, transforming it into something akin to a serene lake, without waves.
In the video, the monotonous landscape of the journey from the edge of the
Salar de Uyuni to Incahuasi Island, captured from inside a car, camera in hand,
was transformed into a kind of exercise in which the viewer follows my effort
to keep centered and leveled the horizon line of Uyuni, the world's largest
salt flat, located in Bolivia.
In
the video, what one sees, in addition to the apparently unchanging landscape,
is the sudden and intermittent appearance of a green guideline -similar to the
grid in computer graphics software-, applied to the horizon line, in those
moments when the camera captures it exactly at the center of the screen and at
zero degrees. The visual result of this exercise, when marked by the emergence
of the guideline, is located between videogame aesthetics and the layout of an
aircraft's control panel after a 90 degree turn that makes the horizon appear
vertical. The guideline appears thicker whenever there is perfect balance
between the two halves of the image, the one on the right filled by the apparently
motionless sky, the one on the left by the salt -or, better put, by the salt
flat- that appears in constant motion: opposites united, harmonized, appeased.
